Reflecting pools in your home: calm and light
A well-placed reflecting pool brings the sky inside and transforms the light in every room. We explain what makes one work, with Reflet du Ciel and Water Front House as guides.

A reflecting pool in a home is a shallow, still plane of water designed to mirror the sky, architecture and vegetation. When done well, it multiplies natural light, softens the space and sets the rhythm of movement through the house. Its success depends on location relative to sun and views, a dark bottom, clean and still water, and maintenance planned from the design phase forward.
At the studio we design with water as one of five elements, alongside sky, trees, fire and earth. Several of our homes use water in different ways, and two of them show this clearly.
What is the difference between a reflecting pool and a swimming pool?
Intention. A swimming pool is designed to be used: to swim, play, cool off. A reflecting pool is designed to be seen. That is why it is usually shallow, with precise edges and a bottom that helps light bounce back. Its job is to stay still.
The two can live side by side and even blend together. At Water Front House in Cumbayá, the home sits at the highest point of the land and is defined by a front-facing pool that extends and wraps around one side. Glass sliding doors let the living and dining areas merge with the water until inside and outside become one space.
Where should you place a reflecting pool inside a home?
Where it has sky to mirror and someone to look at it. It sounds obvious, but many reflecting pools lose their power because they end up in a dark corner or somewhere nobody walks. They work best at an arrival point or a transition: the entrance, a central courtyard, the edge between the living room and the garden.
Reflet du Ciel in Puembo solves this at the entry. A majestic tree welcomes whoever arrives and when the door opens, a reflecting pool takes center stage: it mirrors the sky and connects visually with the social spaces. Nothing announces the water from the street. It appears only when you enter, and that is why it surprises.
The sky, a permanent guest.
At African Tulip House in Tumbaco, the reflecting pool surrounds an African tulip tree that lives at the center of the home. There the water doubles the tree and the sky, turning the heart of the space into a place to pause.
How do you make water reflect like a mirror?
It starts with the bottom. A light bottom lets you see the pool floor. A dark bottom turns the surface into a mirror. Then comes stillness. Water must recirculate and filter to stay clean, but without visible waves or currents. Infinity edges, where water spills into a hidden channel, help the plane look perfectly horizontal and flush with the floor.
Depth matters too. You do not need much water to get the reflection, and a shallow plane is easier to maintain and safer in a home with children. Still, any body of water inside a residence deserves careful thought about safety from the design stage, as does the waterproofing of everything around it.
How do Quito's climate and maintenance affect a reflecting pool?
The Quito valley has a mild climate and intense sun because of the altitude. That favors the reflecting pool: strong light produces sharp reflections and water brings coolness on dry days. But that same sun favors algae if water stagnates, so filtration and a cleaning plan must be part of the project from the start.
If there are trees nearby, as in many of our works, you have to think about where leaves will fall and how to remove them. And if the pool sits under a roof, you need good ventilation so humidity does not build up in walls and finishes. None of this is complicated when you plan it early. It becomes complicated when you solve it later.
What does water bring to daily life at home?
Calm, above all. Still water slows down whoever looks at it. It mirrors the sky at dawn, throws sparkles at the ceiling at midday and darkens with the night. At Reflet du Ciel, that central element creates an atmosphere of serenity and balance where design, light and nature meet.
It also guides. At Magnolia House water appears from the pedestrian entrance and leads the journey with quiet intention. It is a silent way to show the path without a single sign.
If you are thinking about adding water to your home, whether a reflecting pool at the entry or a swimming pool that embraces the living room, write to us and tell us what your land is like. We like to start there, with the light and sky that already exist in the place.
