90 Degree House
The house turns to face the valley.
Earth · Ilaló · 2020
Architectural concept
The site's finest view opens at 90 degrees to the entrance. That turn orients the entire house and makes the landscape the axis of its architecture and its inner life.
On the slopes of Ilaló, a dormant volcano, at 2,550 meters above sea level, the house rests on raised ground surrounded by greenery and silence. The best view is not in front of the entrance: it opens at 90 degrees. The whole project is born from that turn.
The corner of the living room opens up to the landscape, and the master bedroom and the porch look the same way. Upstairs, a cantilever holds a contemplation room that carries the gesture to its highest point, while service areas withdraw toward the rear façade.
The materials speak a quiet industrial language: black and gray pigmented concrete, concrete floors and inlaid stone. With no suspended ceilings, the structure stays in view and the coffered waffle slab sets the rhythm of the ceilings, coordinated to the millimeter with every light and installation.
